Traditional Event of Toshogu Shrine


There are about 120 annual events in Toshogu Shrine. Following events are popular.

Festival of Saitansai on Janurary 1st, Festival of Shinnenkensen on the 2nd and 3rd
Festival of Setsubun on February 3rd, Festival of Kigen on the 11th, Festival of Kinen on the 17th
Festival of Kenkokukou-taisai in March, Ceremony of Sakamukae on April 14th. The Sakamukae is to welcome portable shrine, which go for Takinoo Shrine. Kuriishigaeshi is carried out in May before the Spring Festival. The Kuriishigaeshi is that people clean the precinct by reversing the every single stone.
Ceremony of Ooharae is carried out on June 30th. Autumn Festival in October, Festival of Niinamesai on 26th of November. The Niinamesai is to show appreciation for rich harvest.

December is the busiest month in the year. Osusubarai (Sweeping) on the 20th, The Emperor's Birthday on the 23rd, Festival of Kengakusai on Ieyasu's Birthday, the 26th. Also, Ceremony of Ooharae, Festival of Joya follow then.

Moreover, there is a monthly festival called Tsukinamisai. That festival is carried out three times a month. These days are on the 1st, 17th (Memorial Day of Ieyasu's Death), and 26th. In addition, Festival of Nikkusai is carried out at 8 o'clock every morning. The Shinto priest who was on night duty on the previous night, takes charge of the Nikkusai.
