*Nioumon Gate (The Deva gate)

The Nioumon Gate is the first place, where you visit on the way of Taiyuin Mausoleum. There are 8 pillars. Images of the Niou (The two Deva Kings) such as Misshaku-kongou and Naraen-kongou are put as guardian of the gate. Also, transparent carvings are put on the transom.

The shapes of Nious's mouth are "A", "Un". It expresses that everything has beginning and the end. Also, the style of arms is an expression to encourage good mind, and to admonish evil mind.

You will go out to the stone pave after the Nikoumon Gate. The stones were from Nefukawa of Kanagawa prefecture. Nefukawa is well known as the place, where the best stone is produced. That stone changes its color to red and blue when it rains. Also, there is the 300 years old black pine tree that Ietsuna Tokugawa planted by himself.
