In Meiji period, copper refining facility was built in Kiyotaki
of Nikko city. That facility became known as the Furukawa Battery
later. A typical summer festival of Tochigi prefecture was born
in that place. It is called "Nikko Waraku-odori" (Nikko
Folk Dance of Waraku.)
Taisho Emperor and Empress visited the copper refining
facility on September 6th and 7th, 1913. It was the first time for
private enterprises. It sang spontaneously and danced in a seat
of celebration of the personnel who achieved the great task. Bon
dance was prohibited at that time, but was approved by prefecture
as a bright memorial event. That was a result of citizen's zeal.
Dance was named Waraku, which came from the company policy Kyodo-waraku
(Collaboration and peaceful joy). The folk dance of Waraku is carried
out on Friday around the 6th, 7th of August. It is the middle period
between the foundation memorial day in July, and the Memorial day
of Emperor's visit in September. Lyrics is as follows:
See the trains from Mt. Tanze, Trains come in and
go out with carrying copper
Ringing the bell on the street of Nikko, everyone looks good by
sedge hat with red band
Whistle, but neighbors do not wake up
Because they are married couple (Omission)
Also, songs are invited from workers, and excellent
songs will be sung in the festival.
