*About "Shrines and Temples of Nikko"


"Shrines and Temples of Nikko" is the cultural scene, which consists of 103 buildings (9 national treasure, 94 important cultural property) and natural environment. The precinct and its surrounding are 50.8ha. Also, area of 373.2ha was arranged around the registered site in order to protect the asset. There are 23 registered buildings in Futarasan Shrine including Shinkyo Sacred Bridge. All of these buildings are designated as important cultural property. Especially, Daikokuden Hall, Mitomo Shrine, Hie Shrine, Hongu Shrine and Takinoo Shrine are considered as main buildings. Hongu Shrine and Takinoo Shrine are located on eastern edge and northern edge of each registered area.


Also, 42 buildings of Toshogu Shrine have been registered as World Heritage. It includes 34 buildings of important cultural property, and 8 buildings of national treasure. Main buildings are gathered around Yomeimon Gare, Honden Main Hall, Okusha Inner Shrine. In addition to that, Otabisho Hall near the Shinkyo Bridge, Kyu-okusha-karamon Gate, Torii Gate, and Okariden Hall are designated as important cultural property.

38 registered buildings of Rinnoji Temple mainly consist of Sanbutsu-doh Hall and 4 other surrounding buildings, and Taiyuin Mausoleum. 22 buildings, which belong to the Taiyuin Mausoleum, are registered. Those buildings include Honden Main Hall, Ainoma Middle room, and Haiden Oratory. These are registered as national treasure. In additon to that, Kannon-doh Hall and three-storied pagoda of Shihonryuji Temple, Kodama-doh Hall, Jigen-doh Hall, Twill Halls and Kaizan-doh Hall are registered as property of Rinnoji Temple. Shihonryuji Temple was the birthplace of Nikko. Saint Kukai built the Kodama-doh Hall, and Bishop Tenkai has been enshrined in Jigen-doh Hall. Also, Priest Shoto has been enshrined in the Kaizan-doh Hall.


Honjidoh Hall (Yakushi-doh Hall) also is registered as World Heritage. Nikko Cultural Assets Association for the Preservation of Shrines and Temples owns that building.
