There are 11 sites of World Heritage in Japan with time of December
2000. The first four sites are Shirakami-Sanchi Mountains in Aomori
and Akita prefecture, Yakushima Island in Kagoshima prefecture,
Buddhist buildings in Nara, and Himejijo Castle in Hyogo prefecture.
These sites were registered in 1993.
"Shrines and Temples of Nikko" was registered
as the World Heritage site in 1999, and became the 10th site in
Japan. However, some relics were made by negative results. It is
like Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima prefecture, and Auschwitz (Oswiecim
in Polish).
Also, "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties
of the Kingdom of Ryukyu" was designated as the 11the World
Heritage site in Japan in the 24th session of the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee held at Cairns in Australia in December 2000.
