Sannai is a generic name of area of Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan Shrine and Taiyuin Mausoleum. You will go into the Sannai area after you passed the central Nikko. The border of the central Nikko and the Sannai is Bridge of Nikko, which cross the river of Daiya.

Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji Temple are called NIsha-ichiji, which literally means two shrines and a temple. There is a visitation ticket common to the Nisha-ichiji.

History of Nikko begins with Priest Shoto. He was born in Shimotsuke (former Tochigi prefecture) in 735. He got message from the God to study Buddhism and civilize Nikko. That was when he was 7 years old. After that, Shoto and his 10 followers crossed the river of Daiya in 766. In addition to that, he succeeded to climb the Mt. Nantai in 782. Also, he civilized mountainous area of Nikko.
