The Syouyoen is a typical Japanese garden, which was made in Edo
period. Visitors can walk around the pond. This style of garden
is called Chisen Kaiyu Shiki (Short excursion around the pond).
The Syouyoen garden referred to
Hakkei in order to take care of the successor's homesick because
Rinnoji Temple used to invite its successor from the Imperial family.
The Imperial family was familiar with the view of Hakkei in Oumi
in Shiga prefecture.
The Syouyoen garden was made in
early Edo period originally, but reformed in the beginning of 19th
century. A Confucian scholar, Issai Sato gave a name of Syouyoen
when it was reformed. You will find the building, which enshrines
successive successors and Imperial family. It is located on the
direction of east.
There is the rest station, which
is called Shiumkaku in the west of Syouyoen. However, tourists are
kept out there.
This building has another function
as a community hall, where lecture and tea party are open to priest.
Also, Omimono faces Omote-sandoh
(front approach). The Omimono is the place, where successor of Rinnoji
Temple will be seated when festival of Toshogu Shrine will take
place.
