You will reach the Jigen-doh hall after you passed Futatsu-doh twin
halls and went up the Enmeizaka slope then. By the way, it is told
that your lifetime will be made longer if you walked the slope slowly.
Jigen-doh hall was the place, where
Bishop Tenkai was enshrined. Jigen-doh hall is a generic name of
other buildings, which are related to Bishop Tenkai. For example,
these are Haiden oratory, tomb, library, Amida-doh hall and Shourou
bell tower. Jigen was the saint name for Tenkai.
Bishop Tenkai worked for the first
three Tokugawa successive shoguns such as Ieyasu, Hidetada and Iemitsu.
Also, he was the 53rd leader of Tendai sect in Nikko. Tenkai enshrined
Ieyasu Tokugawa as the God, and revived Nikko. His contribution
to Nikko was great, and he has been enshrined in the corner of Toshogu
area.
He passed away when he was
108 years old. Anniversary of Tenkai's death is on October 2nd.
Rite of Jogoe is carried out on that day in Haiden oratory. Also,
Nattoh soup will be served as a part of Buddhist feast. That was
the one he liked.
Construction of Haiden oratory
is Irimoya style with single layered roof. Also, there are doors
on the both front and back. It stands like a guardian of the tomb.
