The treasure house was built in 1983. Artistic crafts are exhibited
there. There are two rooms in the treasure house. One is for exhibition,
and another is a shed. Also, you can view Shouyouen Japanese garden
from the corridor. You will find this building easily because it
is located on the front of stone steps reaching the Sanbutsu-doh
hall.
A number of treasure is about
6,000 pieces. 48 of these have been designated as important cultural
property, and one is national treasure. In addition to that, many
books and diaries have been stored.
There are about 100 pieces
of treasure in the exhibition room, and that matches to certain
theme, which will be changed randomly. Especially, tapestries are
replaced every two months.
Treasures are related to
Tokugawa family, Rinnoji-no-miya priest from Imperial family, and
co-existence of Shinto and Buddhism.
Buddhist altar and sutra are abundant.
Also, there are many old documents, which have historical value.
In addition to that, 12 constellations have been drawn on the Mandara
Buddhist diagram. That diagram is called "Mandara of the Dipper."
Older treasures are put on
the left side of the exhibition room, and newer treasures are put
on the right side. Those are related to Priest Shoto, and harmonization
of Shinto and Buddhism. You can follow the history of Nikko if you
walk from the left (entrance) to the right (exit) in order.
