Nikko also was involved with chaos of warring states period in the
16th century. Hideyoshi Toyotomi confiscated feudal estate in Nikko
because religious followers of Nikko participated in the Hojo family
against Hideyoshi.
However, Bishop Tenkai revived Nikko later. He
was an advisor of Tokugawa shogunate, and gave a strong influence
to the establishment of Toshogu Shrine.
By the way, there is an interesting legend regarding Bishop Tenaki.
According to the legend, he was Mitsuhide Akechi, who betrayed Nobunaga
Oda in Honnoji temple, and escaped from chaser later. Then Mitsuhide
became Bishop and renamed as Tenkai. Also, Bishop Tenkai wanted
to leave his real name, and named it for the best landscape in Nikko.
That is Akechi-daira plateau today.
