Subordinate Shrines

*Hie Shrine


The Hie Shrine is located on the west side of Haiden oratory near the Shinyosha shed of sacred sedan chair. Roof is curvature and covered with copper tiles. Front part of the roof is in Irimoya style, while backside of the roof is in Kiritusuma style. The Hie Shrine is designated as an important cultural property.

Priest Jikaku enshrined the god in 848, but the god was the other self of the God of Mt. Hiei in Kyoto. Also, the Hie Shrine is called Sannou Shrine commonly, and there were several other Sannou Shrines in Nikko, these were corrupted in Meiji Restoration. Honden main hall was built in 1644-48, and moved to present place in 1909. Ooyamakuino-mikoto God is enshrined there. The Ohyamakuino-mikoto is the guardian of mountain and healthy.



Hie Shrine

*Daikokuden Hall

Oomunachino-mikoto is enshrined there. That god also is called Ookuninushino-mikoto. Specifically speaking, characters of these gods are different, but they were recognized as the same god. Moreover, those gods came to be respected as Daikokuten Buddhist God. That god is of lucky and wealth. Monthly festival is carried out on the second Saturday, and Daikoku Festival in the June is the biggest one. This building is designated as an important cultural property.

*Mitomo Shrine


The Mitomo Shrine is surrounded by giant cedars. Sukunabikono-mikoto is enshrined there. That god is of wisdom, and he follows Oomunachino-mikoto of Honden.

Date of construction is not obvious, but it may be in the middle of Edo period judging from construction style and an inscription. The inscription tells us that it was made in 1753. This shrine has been designated as an important cultural property.

Roof is in the shape of curvature and gable is like a natural flow. There was a big repairing in 1973-74, and thatch became board.

Festival will be carried out on May 15th.
