*Tohaimon gate, Tohaidou road

Tohaimon gate is an entrance of Mt. Nantai.

The Tohaimon gate is located on the right side of Honden main hall. This gate will be open from May 5th to October 25th. In this season, climbers apply to the Shamusho office to get permission, and they will be able to climb the mountain.

However, Tohaimon gate will be crowded in the first week from the festival. Especially, 0 o'clock midnight of July 31st is the most. Therefore, climbers will be divided into each group of 100 people in order to avoid accident.

Tohaidou road (Front approach)
Road for mountain climbing

The distance between Tohaimon gate and Oku-Miya shrine is about 6km, and an altitude difference is about 1200m. It takes ordinary people about three hours and half to climb up to the top of the mountain. You will find Takinoo shrine at the 8th stage of the mountain.

Mt. Nantai used to be called Mt. Kurokami. The kurokami means black hair. Literally, trees are grown thickly like a hair.
Also, road for climbing is full of cold air. Viewing the sunrise will be so rewarding after you achieved the summit.

By the way, precinct of Futarasan shrine is 3400 hectare wide. This is the second largest precinct following the Ise shrine in Japan. That area includes Mt. Nantai, Mt. Nyohou, Mt. Akanagi, Mt. Tarou, Mt. Oomanako, Mt. Komanako, Mt. Mae-shirane and Mt. Oku-shirane.
