*Tachiki Kannon -Goddess of Mercy-

11-headed Kannon is enshrined in the Hondoh main hall. According to a legend, Priest Shoto saw that the gold 1000-armed Kannon appeared from the Lake Sainoko. Shoto carved its figure.

The Senju-Kaonnon (1000-armed kannon) is a real figure of Mt. Nantai. Image of Kannon was carved from standing tree. The standing tree was called Tachiki in Japanese. That was why this statue was named Tachiki Kannon.

Pieces of Japanese Judas tree were put together to make a figure of both right and left arms. There has not been big repairing, and the original image still remains. It is 6 meters high, but you will feel closer because lower part of the statue is hidden. It was made in the later 8th century. It is interesting that facial feature is different from Heian period.

This, Tachiki-Kaonnon was once sunk in the Lake Chuzenji by tidal wave in 1902, but it came floating back miraculously. Tachiki-Kannon was moved as Chuzenji Temple moved.

Two other images on the both sides were contributed by Yoritomo Minamotono to pray for triumph.
