*Life of Sockeye salmon in the Lake Chuzenji

Color of the Lake Chuzenji becomes red prior to autumnal leaves season. It does not mean that underwater plant becomes red, but means trout change their color to red in spawning season. That color reflects surface of the water.

Sockeye salmon in spawning season

Life of the Sockeye salmon begins in the river. It is like a life of salmon, which is the ancestor of Sockeye salmon. They go out to the lake, and color of body becomes silver. Also, they become strong enough to spend their lives in the seawater. The Sockeye salmon still has the same characteristics as the ancestor has even though in the different environment.

The Sockeye salmon spend 3 or 4 years in the ocean, and start coming back to the river when they redden for spawning. Male trout is waiting for ejaculation while female trout digs a hole for spawning. They will die after the spawning. You can see the spawning on the riverside near Shobugahama.

Spawning of Sockeye salmon

There is an interesting story regarding instinct of salmon and trout. A group of Sockeye salmon committed a suicide jumping down to the basin of the Kegon waterfall about 10 years ago. In 1994, Honmasu trout, lives only in Lake Chuzenji, was found at down-stream of the Kinugawa. Its size was 50cm large. It is imaginable enough that one of the group trout survived and came back to the river.
