*Futarasan Oku-miya Shrine

Priest Shoto established a small shrine on the top of Mt. Nantai in 782. That shrine is called Oku-miya shrine today. Many ascetics came to there to follow Shoto, and mountainous worship became popular then.

Viewing sunrise from Oku-miya shrine

You will find Oku-miya Shrine after you passed Torii copper gate on the top of Mt. Nantai. The shrine faces the south. Also, there are Shamusho office and rest house near the shrine.

Official record of altitude of Mt. Nantai was 2484m, but recent research by Geographical Survey Institute corrected to 2486m in October 2003.

Moreover, triangle spot on the summit is treated as a sacred place, where Priest Shoto and his followers worshipped. There is Torii gate on the giant rock, and 3.3m long sword is stuck on the rock.

Since the Oku-miya stands on the top of Mt. Nantai, where severe winter and cool summer come, you cannot help feeling its strictness.

Tarousan Shrine on the top of Mt. Nantai

There is Tarousan Shrine on the rocky place where 200 meters west from the summit of Mt. Nantai. Ajisukitakahikoneno-mikoto is enshrined. The Ajisuki-takahikoneno-mikoto is a god of cultivation and agriculture.

You can look down on Lake Chuzenji, Senjohagara Plateau, and have distant view of Mt. Fuji and smoke of Mt. Asama. According to a historical record, Priest Shoto was in an ecstasy when he saw this landscape first time.

Also, ancient ascetics were hung in reverse as a part of training. Historical relics of ancient religious services have been found around, and it is imaginable that there were so many ascetics there. Instruments were excavated from the site, and these are exhibited and collected in the Treasure House.

In addition, there is Takinoo Shrine at eighth stage of the mountain, and you also might see a trace of landslide near the shrine.
